Yeah, the guesswork is from my part, not XnViewMP, I just opened the batch convert to something that seemed to be what you needed. And yes, it makes backups before converting, that I find a bit inconvenient as well.

Maybe ExifPilot is what you need. As for an image's default orientation before Exif, there isn't such a thing. An image file by default is a plain image, it has no orientation, just maybe W > H or the other way around. I'm not 100% sure about it, but logically it's the phone / camera that should set the (Exif) orientation based on its position when taking the photo. If Rainmeter's way of displaying images (plain image without any custom orientation) is desired, then probably removing the orientation metadata is what you need, as mentioned by SilverAzide. You'd need to make sure of that though, that's why I suggested selecting a couple of "problematic" case images (Exif oriented or not) first and do some tests on them.
